Hey all, my name is Lord of Pirates (AKA Captain Phigg) and I serve as one of the humble servents of Sogen Con. Here's a brief right up of my voice actor idol activity that will be present on Saturday.

Voice Actor Idol is a tournament style competition where contestants will show off their voice imitation and invention skills before our panel of guest judges. The contestants will be placed in groups of two, whoever recieves a higher score from our panel goes on to the next round. The total number of contestants admitted to participate in the event is 16. After three rounds we will have two winners who will recieve our prize and perform in one last round for the audiences entertainment. Here are the three rounds:

Imitation: This round consists of our contestants presenting their own imitation of an already English dubbed anime character. They have a maximum of thirty seconds to present their character in any situation they choose. They will be judged on originality, accuracy, and delivery. (16 participants)

Flexibility: When our audience enters the event, a select number will be asked to submit suggestions to our host. They will be asked to write down two English dubbed anime characters (a male and a female) and a scenario. The contestants will then have to do their best to meet the two criteria. They will be judged on how well they portray the scenario, accuracy and delievery. (8 participants)

Invention: In the final round, participants will be given an image of a random anime character. They will have to develop the voice for that character on the spot based on the characters description. They will be judged on how well the judges feel they represented the character. (4 participants)

That's the basic idea of the event. If you want to participate then please show up to the Voice Actor Idol booth on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning to sign up, sign waivers, and recieve a designated number. If our desired number is reached we will close the booth until the event. If a registered participant does not show up at the designated time we will offer their spot to a willing audience member. MOST IMPORTANT, IF WE FAIL TO RECIEVE A DESIRED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS THE EVENT WILL NOT TAKE PLACE. Please keep this in mind when attending. Thank you.

I would love to do that, but the flexibilty part may be a problem for me...I'm afraid I'm limited to AS anime, so I may not know the person the audience member wrote down...^^'

you aren't recreating the already used voice, but we are giving you a image and you are creating your own unique voice for that image. I.E. Chiyo Chan as a gangster.

I would love to be in Voice Actor Idol, sadly I'm not good at Imitations because I'm so limited in my Anime voice knowledge. Ahh, but I would do fine in invention...hmm...I need to think about it!

In all reality we are just looking for you to try and get down the caricature, besides for the imitation round you submit the character and situation you want to present, so if you're still unsure I recommend you find a character, get their voice down, and use that for the first round. Hope that helps :)

In other news:

Here ladies and germs are the hours of operation for my sign-up booth.

On Friday:

Noon - 3pm

6pm-7:30pm

In case you are wondering, the reason for this is at 3 we have opening ceremonies and right after I have my Inside the Voice Actor Studio panel (please attend!) and at 7:30pm are awesome panels I want to attend.

On Saturday:

8am-11am

V.A. Idol begins at 12:30pm on Saturday. Contestants who sign up are expected to be present fifteen minutes before the event begins, no exceptions. Also at this time if you wanted to be part of the fun but missed out on signing, and either a) we have open spots due to someone not showing up or b) we have open spots in general, at this time you are free to come and sign up for the event. Keep in mind once I reach my 16 contestants I will close the booth until the contest. If during this time you signed up and decide not to participate, simply inform the Sogen Con official in the Con Ops and they will relay the message to me. Other than that I believe the event is going smooth. I look forward to seeing all of you at Sogen Con!

I'm afraid so. Because I have a feeling a decent number of people will want to participate, I can't hold positions for people who aren't sure. That's not to say I won't hold your position and you decide to cancel. Just give us adequite time and all will be well.

I think I will sign up, I'm terrible at imatating other char's voices, but I'd at least be there so ppl could point and laugh at me ;) Anything so the event will happen, it sounds like fun :)

This sounds pretty fun, actually. I think it'd be fun to do the invention one...except that I'm afraid of embarrassing myself with my nasally voice *blushes*. I dunno. I'll think about it.

No no! I wouldn't want to have a position held. I'll go up and register just like everyone else. The people that get there first deserve it. XD

After talking with Jacen Solo I felt it behooved (fancy word for something important) me to let all of you know something about Voice Actor Idol before we begin. Unless you do really freaking well, YOU WILL BE MADE FUN OF! Specifically from our three main judges, Mike McFarland, Colleen Clickenbeard and someone else whose name escapses me just now. It will be good natured ribbing in a style very similar to American Idol, played up for laughs and not in any way detrimentally serious...but it will happen. The best thing for you is to put on your mental lead coat, suck it up, and just have fun with it. To break the ice I plan on submitting an impression of my own, for example purposes only of course. What is it you may ask? Come to Sogen Con to find out. ;)

I'm glad someone asked this question. In the second part I'm asking the audience for some pretty well known anime characters, if for whatever reason the person performing doesn't know that character then I'm asking the person who submitted the suggestion to briefly explain the character. There's a good chance I may know it as well so that would help.

You can use those characters, just be prepared to explain the hell out of the character to the uber confused participant. Although I wouldn't mind hearing what the emporer from Now and Then would sound like as an infomercial salesman. Heh heh...carnage.
