Suggestions for 2007
« on: May 22, 2006, 10:00:19 PM »
Let's put our CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions here for improving 2007's Sogencon.

1) Better lighting around the area.  Unfortunately at the school there were a TON of really poor lighting areas and not many good ones (about the only ones were the dealer rooms and classrooms if the lights were on).  If it's possible for you to have some control over this, do it.  Better lighting overall creates better images for us to share later.

2) I mentioned this to you before, but just a reminder...when posting information about the Cosplay contest next year, make sure to include that you want a reference image or the like.  That would so help the n00bs (like I was this year).

3) Bigger gaming area.  We only had one classroom this year (unlike 2 from last) and it got REALLY cramp in there with 2 GCs, an Xbrick, and a PS2 w/ DDR going.

4) The pizza and pop were great for some food (and I think fairly priced), but could you include some more snack stuff?  I'm sure others would like it.  It didn't bug me any (I had brought my own stuff), but just an idea to add some more variety.  I don't know what will be around next year given the new location, unlike the fact that we had candy machines around the college.  Just something to look out for.

5) Have somebody on staff (or a volunteer) be an official photographer.  Taking pics of everybody at the cosplay contest was nice (hope to see them soon) but maybe we could expand it further?  Just an idea.

That's about all I have at this point.  Great Sogencon 2006 though!  Can't wait for next year (this is gonna be a loooong year).

One, somewhat stupid suggestion,

When making next years Guide booklet, could the guests pictures be on alternate pages.

when they signed with their sharpies the ink bled through, onto some other very important pictures....................LAURA, WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, SHES FOREVER SLIGHTLY DARKER... sob sob**

Well things that we already have solved for next that have been brought up so far as follows.

Lighting
1. Lighting, The Sioux Falls convention center has alot better lighting equipped throughout the convention center, so your pictures should naturally turn out better!

Gaming Area

2. In comparison to this year we have a monstrous gaming area that will be used, the room is equipped with the ability to be completely darkened for optimal gaming.

Food and Snacks
3. Inside the dealer room there will be a full blown concession stand which is going to be run by the convention center. You will be able to get nachos, soda, hot dogs, pizza, water, candy, and much more. We will also be taking suggestions throuhgout the months to come on what should be stocked for 2007.

Official Photographer
4. We had one of our cosplay judges taking pictures of all the people who entered the cosplay contest. We haven't had a chance to look at all the pictures yet  but they will be up and running as soon as possible.

Alternating pages
5. From a cost stand point i dont know how practical this is, as something is going to have to be on the opposite page. The best we could do is try for thicker paper stock in which the sharpies might not bleed through as easily.  Another thing we could do is actually have an autograph page. We could have a picture of each guest running down a side of a page with a big open spot for the autograph/message next to the picture.

Cosplay Reference picture
6. Yeah, that was our bad. We will make sure to list that for next year.

In regards to the Game Room, I was glad we had such nice turnouts for Naruto 4 and Super Smash Bros Melee ( though less with Soul Calibur 2) and want to help again next year.

Assuming my stuff still works, and my reserves get into EB, I will be willing to lend my XBox, Gamecube, and the Wii I plan on getting this fall. I also plan on getting Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and if it is alright with staff then, I will be willing to set up a tournament for that, too.

If there is room/time for a card tournament, I will try to run a Magic tournament, too. I know Brad backed out last year, and from what I hear from friends who go to school in SD, the card game scene is dead around there.

I think an autograph page or two is a great idea for the program guide.  Definately something that makes it nice and easy to put all the autographs in one place. ^_^

For the sigs, the idea of more white space (possibly through a larger page overall) sounds like a good idea.  I don't know how you guys deal with your booklets or how much it costs, but (just throwing this out) check out how doing it through a company like www.lulu.com would be for cost effectiveness and getting what you want.

Thanks for the news on the other stuff Jacen.  Sounds most excellent.

one thing that would be helpful is having a more set schedule. and the sooner the schedule can be set in cement, the better (I know, i know, in a perfect world :p )

Oh yeah! oh yeah! Concerning the food situation! If we are doing it in the convention center, then ya'll know we're gunna have to provide our own concessions/food. If we can get food and/or snacks available throughout the day, that would be the best. It's gunna be nice that the hotel is attached to the convention center, but not having to go offsite for food would be nice (specially since the arena is kinda surrounded by industrial park and residential) I know cosplayers get grumpy when deprived of food ('specially when surrounded by pounds of metal, wood, and molded plastic. poor al!)

Thanks for throwing such a fuun con this year tho ;)

Food abounds!? With 12th Street nearby there's the Fry'n Pan with free WIFI access, Taco Johns, Burger King, McDonalds, B&G, KFC, KC's, DQ.? Of course I'm mainly thinking of stuff between me and the convention center.? I love Food!!? If were lucky the road construction in that ara will be done by then.?? If not theres always a few that deliver.? Chinese, Pizza, Chicken Wings.? (I am sooooo hungry now.)
Now for my suggesion.
I ran this by Micaturtle and she thought I should post it here.? What about a "Guess the Sex" game.? Take a nice face only pic of a charater and block out all hair and identifing marks, tatoos and the like and guess the sex.? I know I wonder most times.?

Whadayall think?

And Karaoke!!! WE NEED Karaoke!? I have to feed my monkey!

Hmm... suggestions..

1) That would have been nice if the scheduling wouldn't have been changed.? I know it couldn't be helped, but my friends and I missed out on some of the events that went on.

2) Lighting.... that's been discussed before..

3) I don't think the food issue was too bad, we usually had Papa John's pizza delivered or Applebees, breakfeast was free at Best Western and we didn't even think about lunch....

4)? The gaming room was kind of tight..? I personally think? DDR should have it's own room, being that it gets hot and sweaty and icky sometimes... not fun.

5) Awwww, Karaoke would have been so fun!! I vote karaoke for next year.

I think that's about it...? Awesome job overall, I really enjoyed Sogen! =)

The funny thing, to me, about that is that we were planning on running 2 rooms this year so gamers weren't too crowded. The other room apparently never came about.

On another note, I want to find a bunch of people to come to the Olive Garden with me in costumes next year.

And the reason I chose the Olive Garden is, quite frankly, it's the only restaurant I plan on going to there. There are about 5 restaurants in Sioux Falls I can't find in Minnesota, except up in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc... But I only really miss the Garden.

Never been to the Olive Garden, or Sioux Falls? I never got to go to the Olive Garden before my 20th birthday, and we made a point to go for it. (Based solely on a quote from Clone High...)

I really fail to see the big deal about Olive Garden. I'm thoroughly underwhelmed with the one in Sioux Falls, both in quality of food and of service.

Alternating pages

We could have a picture of each guest running down a side of a page with a big open spot for the autograph/message next to the picture.

Maybe a better idea would be to sell an autograph book that had pics of all the VA's on alternating pages for maybe $2 each.  Then someone could buy this and not have to worry about the bleed through.

I have only had one dish there, the same both times I have gone. I don't remember the name, but it was an angelhair pasta with a sauce that included tomatoes, garlic, and herbs. I wish I remembered the name, I love it.

I have never been to one elsewhere, though, so I can't compare it to another location.

I personally don't think this is a good idea.  Some VAs do personalize some things when they sign autographs, plus getting "presigned" stuff isn't as much fun.  It's great that you're coming up with new solutions, but I think there are better.

As long as we're on the subject of food I vote that alot of people go to the Hu Hot Mongolian Grill. It's basically a buffet of different uncooked meats, vegetables, noodles and sauces, you combine the stuff you want to eat, they cook it right in front of you, and there is pleasure to be had by everyone. That, and Fuddruckers is good. There is also a good sushi restaurant in the uptown area, but it's small and I would hate to see people overcrowded.
